I wonder, would it be possible for this place to have a chess game system, playing against a computer? Also, question. It says: "From computer games to video games," should I take it literally? Like, would there be Pac-Man somewhere on here?

You can search the message boards and find forums regardig the question about all things accesssible games. given how long this site has been around, I wouldn't be surprised if someone posted something about video games. Post a topic under zone BS suggestions and see if anyone responds to the chess idea.

Chess would be an interesting addition.

I don't know how you would webify it in any meaningful capacity but I suppose tables with aria-drag and aria-dropto could do it, I suppose hook into the Gnu chess engine if that old thing is still around and if the chess servers are still around on a Sun Spark running Solaris or something. Did I just say Sun Spark? Yes I did. Talk about old lol but you know how that stuff goes. Servers not maintained if they're Unix-based can last an awful long time, even with some really outdated OS software. GCC is pretty self-contained except for the connections for game players.

Ok 20-somethings still living at home and with a hankering for programming / not yet signed on to an employer somewhere, hop to it! Lol.

i'm shit with chess notation to play it online. Took a course on that years ago, and I still don't get it, even with the books in front of me. It's probably easier than I think. i'm one of those people that tends to make things more complicated than they actually are.

Uh, setting up chess AI on the zone would be quite a pain in the ass, particularly if you wanted a half-decent engine that would 1. know the rules, 2. have a decent opening book and 3. have enough depth to be challenging. And then of course there's the question of difficulty settings, since everyone's chess expertise is different. If you used an engine at full strength, most people would probably get their butts kicked over and over again, and wouldn't learn a lot.

Gnu Chess is just that engine and is open source. Gnu Chess has been around for years.
But yes, it would be a pain in the ass, not because the engine wouldn't work -- it does. But doing the UI for such a thing would simply be a pain in the ass, and for not enough users. Gnu Chess has been around since the 90s though.

I don't even understand chess. But, someone did send me some old games from the Apple2e. And, I don't know why I admit I have them. LOL
I can barely get out of a maze, and I have tried understanding chess for years. I wish you the best, in finding a way to play it.
Blessings,
Sarah

The mac has a chess board game on it and VoiceOver works with it. I don't know the engine it uses, I'm actually not a great chess player myself.
There are several free open source engines for the board out there, the trick is the UI, to be honest. I could never play where you entered moves by equation. Entering the move was fine, but I find it helpful to look at the board. Could never just hold the entire board in my head, although I have a brother who can hold several in his head at once. Not this very average guy *smile*

Lol, I have those emulators too, and can't get those things up and running to
save my life. Probably for the best though, sense I was addicted to them when
I was younger, and loved it when I got free time in school to play those games,
then my vision teacher was kind enough to make me copies of them after I left
and got a computer of my own.
